Sharon R. Ions, program officer for the Aetna Foundation, is responsible for managing an extensive portfolio of national and strategic grants, specializing in the Foundation's focus area of reducing obesity rates. She also administers many of the foundation’s communications activities, including its website.
Prior to joining the foundation, she was a senior program manager at the American Red Cross in Denver. There, she managed the youth leadership and development program, guiding high school students in the formulation and implementation of service-learning projects. The program was recognized for its innovative efforts to foster collaborative partnerships. Earlier in her tenure at the American Red Cross, she coordinated local and national disaster relief efforts, providing direct assistance and counseling to people who had been displaced or affected. After September 11, she joined many of her colleagues in New York City, assisting those who were impacted.
She is an active volunteer, preparing food for the homeless for Mercy Housing and Shelter in Hartford, and participates in many Aetna-sponsored employee volunteer efforts throughout the year.
She holds a B.A. from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, N.Y.
