Aetna and the Aetna Foundation have been recognized many times for our commitment to improving the health and well being of communities across the country. A sampling of awards and honors is below.
Corporate Leadership Award
January 2011 – Easter Seals Capital Region & Eastern Connecticut awarded the Aetna Foundation with the 2010 Corporate Leadership Award at their Annual Meeting and Donor Appreciation Reception on January 25, 2011. This distinct honor is awarded to the corporation whose achievements throughout the year include considerable financial assistance, in-kind services and employee engagement.
Leadership Award
December 2010 – The National Hispanic Health Foundation presented Dr. Anne C. Beal and the Aetna Foundation with its Leadership Award for efforts to reduce disparities in health and health care.
Admiral Zumwalt Corporate Award
October 2010 --The National Marrow Donor Program presented its Admiral Zumwalt Corporate Award to Aetna for the company’s broad-based efforts to register more than 1800 employees nationwide as potential bone marrow donors.
Soar High Leaders Award
September 2010 – Anne C. Beal, MD, MPH, and president of the Aetna Foundation, was honored with a Soar High Leaders Award by the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine (IAMMM) at its annual awards gala in Washington, D.C. Dr. Beal and the Aetna Foundation were recognized for promoting health and health care equity for racial and ethnic minorities.
Business Partner Award
March 2010 – Aetna received the Business Partner Award from the Fresno Compact, a coalition of community leaders in Fresno, California. The group aims to focus community-wide efforts on preparing students for the increasing demands of society and the workplace.
Aetna was 1 of 10 businesses to receive the award, which is given to businesses that "… have built exceptional partnerships with schools, contributing time and resources to help students reach their full potential."
Aetna's partnership with Fresno State University has resulted in the on-campus Aetna Wellness Center, which serves the student population, as well as an upcoming Wellness Mobile Unit. The mobile unit will provide the community of Fresno access to information and educational materials on wellness. Aetna was also the recipient of a Special Congressional Recognition signed by Jim Costa, 20th Congressional District.
Business of the Year Award
January 2010 – Aetna received the Friendship Service Center's Business of the Year Award. The service center aims to end homelessness in greater New Britain, Connecticut. It runs shelters, a soup kitchen, and a transitory living program.
Aetna was honored for two programs it sponsors. Casual for a Cause allows Aetna employees to pay a dollar a day in exchange for dressing more casually than the company dress code allows. Aetna's Bookbag Project provides book bags for schoolchildren and fills them with age-appropriate school supplies.
Top Company for Community Development
November 2009 - Aetna was one of seven companies named the “Top Company for Community Development” by DiversityInc, a well-known publication focused on the business value of diversity.
Luke Visconti, DiversityInc’s CEO, said, "Aetna understands that the well-being of the communities it serves ensures its success as a business. Last year (2008), Aetna and the Aetna Foundation donated more than $25 million to nonprofits that share its focus on building strong communities, ending racial/ethnic health care inequities, creating health literacy, and disease prevention. Aetna’s efforts go far beyond writing checks.”
Aetna Chairman and CEO Ron Williams attended the event with several Aetna executives, including Dr. Anne Beal, head of the Aetna Foundation. "This recognition further validates the good work that our employees continue to do in and for our communities," Williams said.
